My research interest focuses on the problems of nationalism and international relations in Northeast Asia, with particular focus on Japan and Russia. My past research focused on the formation of national identities and their influence on foreign policy, Japanese security policy, and on Russo-Japanese relations. My current projects focus on Russian nationalism, Japanese nationalism, and more broadly on the future of the nation-state. Good knowledge of history and a bit of theoretical perspective can make politics an exciting subject to study. In my courses, I seek to convey my own excitement in the subject, and to encourage students to undertake independent research.
